Canyoning, Introduction

HOW TO MOVE IN A CANYON

Canyoning is safe when we follow some basic rules. As we start our descent there are some easy safety tips that are essential for fun and action.

• We remain in a group and in visual contact at least in pairs.

• We systematically check the anchorages. As all canyoning techniques levels suggest it is recommended that each anchor consist of two points connected to each other.

• We verify the length and condition of the ropes. We place protectors on the points of friction or we use canyoning techniques that allow the displacement of the points of friction.

• We never jump on water ponds without having previously checked them (depth, obstacles, water movements).

• We are very careful while walking on the slippery rocks and while free descending at some locations of the canyon without the need of ropes.

• We make sure to have food and fluids regularly from the entrance of the canyon until the exit. Dehydration will make us weak and the lack of food will make us feel the cold more intense. Therefore snacks, electrolytes, tea with honey, water, some chocolate and nuts are the best for a pleasant canyoning experience.

• We store some food in case of an emergency necessary delay of our exit.

• We help our fellow canyoners on the retrieving of the ropes to keep warm and promote group spirit.

• We assist weak canyoning members with humor, patience and encouragement.
